The New American Basketball Association (ABA):
The New American Basketball Association (ABA) is a professional basketball pyramid (i.e. a set of leagues) in the United States. Unlike other North American sports leagues, this league will use a “promotion & relegation” system similar to the European soccer leagues.
Combining teams from the 2nd ABA (2000), the Current NABL, & the various current & defunct outdoor leagues, the new ABA is meant to be a competitor to the NBA & will play a 50-game schedule. The new professional ABA leagues (played in the fall/winter/spring) will consist of no more than 20 teams at each level of the league pyramid, with 2 conferences of 10 teams each.
Following the conclusion of the regular season, 4 teams from each conference (i.e. 8 teams from each level) advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament culminating in the ABA Championships. The playoffs will usually start on the second week of April and is played between the champions of the Eastern & Western Conferences. The new ABA will play under FIBA Rules with the following exceptions listed on this website.
